WHO IS NİHAT AKGÜN?

Accused of carpet smuggling, land occupation and injury, the nationalist Akgün attracted attention by beating students together with plainclothes police officers during the student march organized by the police on April 14, 1987. In 1989, he was involved in the beating of journalist Aydın Özdalga, who was investigating the demolition works of Eminönü Mayor Tahir Aktaş.

Akgün was removed from the hall by the MHP executives on the grounds that he was related to the mafia at the Turkish Congress held in Istanbul later on. Akgün, who is also one of the owners of the Akgün Hotel, was killed in the crossfire when he was having dinner with his two female friends at his own Akgün Mayna Restaurant in Ataköy Regatta on November 25, 1999.

Two days after Akgün was killed, the alleged murderers of Mustafa Akhan and Şaban Akhan, along with three people who helped them, were caught. It was alleged that Hüseyin Başak, the gang leader with a golden gun, with whom Akgün spent a short time in the same prison, had him killed.
